Description
Origin
The Zamia furfuracea, better known as the Cardboard Palm, is native to eastern Mexico. This plant species is primarily found in the states of Veracruz and Tabasco. It is a species that has adapted to life in drier environments, which means it is quite resistant to drought periods.
Characteristics
One of the most striking features of the Zamia furfuracea is its leathery, almost cardboard-like leaves – hence its nickname ‘Cardboard Palm’. The plant grows in a rosette and can reach one meter in diameter as well as in height. The leaves are thick and fleshy with a dark green color. Unlike true palms, the Zamia furfuracea grows from a spherical thickening in the ground.
Care
The Zamia furfuracea has a moderate need for water. Water the plant regularly, but ensure that the soil can dry well between waterings. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves of this plant, so place it in an area with indirect sunlight. The ideal temperature for this plant is between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius.
