Description
Origin
The Zamia furfuracea, also known as the Cardboard Palm, originates from southeastern Mexico. Here, the plant mainly grows in the coastal regions of Veracruz. The plant belongs to the Zamiliaceae family and appeared during the Paleozoic era.
Characteristics
The Zamia furfuracea is characterized by its thick, leathery leaves that grow from a sturdy central trunk. The leaves are dark green in color and reach a length of 50 to 150 cm. They have a slight sheen and a curved shape reminiscent of a palm leaf, hence the nickname “Cardboard Palm.” The plant produces relatively large female cones with a reddish-brown hue.
Care
For the care of the Zamia furfuracea, it is important to know that the plant likes to be in a sunny or semi-shaded spot. It does not tolerate temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius well and should therefore be kept indoors in colder climates. The soil should be well-drained. Furthermore, it is recommended to water the plant moderately to sparingly, as it is a succulent plant well adapted to drier conditions. Although the Zamia furfuracea is not a fast-growing plant, it can last for many years with proper care and appropriate conditions.
