Origin
The Yucca elephantipes, also known as the Star Palm, originates from the southern part of North America and Central America. It is mainly found in dry and desert areas, like in Mexico and Guatemala. This plant belongs to the Asparagaceae family and has spread over the last centuries to other parts of the world, including Europe.
Characteristics
The Yucca elephantipes is an evergreen plant known for its straight, tall, woody stems called ‘elephant legs’. The ends of the stems bear clusters of long, sharp, light green leaves. These leaves can reach up to sixty centimeters in length. What makes the Yucca elephantipes special is the magnificent inflorescence that sometimes develops, composed of large, bell-shaped white flowers.
Care
The care of the Yucca elephantipes is relatively simple, which is why it is often used as an indoor plant. It prefers bright, indirect light but can also survive in partial shade. Watering should be moderate, especially in winter, to prevent the roots from being waterlogged. Furthermore, the plant prefers well-drained soil and an environment with relatively low humidity.
