Description
Origin
The Wodyetia bifurcata, also known as the foxtail palm, is a palm species native to Queensland, Australia. This type of palm was only discovered scientifically in 1983, making it one of the most recently discovered palm species.
Characteristics
The Wodyetia bifurcata is easily recognizable due to its unique shape. The palm has a thin, gray trunk and can reach up to 10 meters in height. The most striking feature is the foliage, which is shaped like a feather or foxtail, hence the nickname foxtail palm. Each petiole carries about a dozen leaves, and each leaf can reach up to 2 meters in length.
Care
The Wodyetia bifurcata needs full sun and well-drained soil to grow. Although the palm is drought tolerant, it performs best with regular watering. Standing water can cause root rot, so it is important to ensure sufficient drainage. The palm is also tolerant of a wide range of soil types, from sand to clay to silt. However, the palm performs best in nutrient-rich soil, slightly acidic to neutral.
