Description

Origin
The Washingtonia filifera, also known as the California fan palm, is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. This species grows in oases, canyons, and dry riverbeds in the Sonoran and Mojave deserts.

Characteristics

The Washingtonia filifera is a perennial palm species and can reach a height of 15 to 20 meters. The trunk of the palm is thick and often covered with dead leaves, forming a distinctive “skirt” around the trunk. The leaves are large and have a fan shape, reaching up to 3 meters wide, with edges rich in fibers.

Care

The California fan palm needs plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil. The plant is very tolerant of different soil types, including sand, loam, and clay. Despite its desert origin, this type of palm requires regular watering and is quite drought tolerant once well established. Its ability to withstand temperatures as low as -10°C also makes the Washingtonia filifera suitable for cooler climates.
