Description
Origin
The Veitchia merrillii, more commonly known as the Christmas palm broadleaf veitchia, is native to the Philippines. This species grows in its natural environment in lowland forest areas, where it is very common. The branches of this palm-like tree can be found at elevations of up to 400 meters above sea level.
Characteristics
The Veitchia merrillii has beautiful feathery leaves that are primarily green but can develop a bluish tint under the right conditions. The plant produces beautiful red fruits the size of a small plum. The tree can reach a height of about 25 meters in optimal growing conditions. However, in cultivation, it is generally limited to 15 meters.
Care
The Veitchia merrillii generally requires medium light conditions but grows best in partial shade or under indirect sunlight. Ensure you have well-drained soil to prevent root rot. It is desirable to water the plant copiously, yet it can slightly dry out between waterings. Care includes typical trimming of palm leaves and sometimes a calcium supplement to prevent brown burns.
