Description
Origin
The Veitchia (Adonidia) merrillii, also known as the Christmas palm, is native to the Philippines and Malaysia. In these tropical regions, the palm reaches impressive heights in natural conditions. It was named after the American botanist Elmer Drew Merrill.
Characteristics
The Veitchia merrillii is characterized by its elegant appearance and streamlined growth. The tree can reach up to 10 meters high and bears beautiful glossy leaves. In summer, elegant white flowers appear abundantly, which give way to bright red fruits in autumn and winter. These fruits are oval and measure about 1 inch in diameter.
Care
The Veitchia merrillii requires a warm and humid environment to thrive. The plant needs plenty of light, but not direct sunlight; a spot in partial shade is recommended. Regular watering and fertilizing keep the soil nutritious and moist, without causing waterlogging. Furthermore, the palm requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot.
