Origin
The Veitchia merrillii, also known as Adonidia merrillii, is a tropical palm native to the Philippines. It is notably known on the island of Palawan, as well as in urban areas like Manila. The plant is named after Elmer Drew Merrill, a prominent American botanist who greatly contributed to research on the flora of the Philippines and East Asia.
Features
The Veitchia merrillii is a slender, upright palm that can reach a height of 6 to 8 meters. It has a smooth, gray trunk and dark green leaves that characteristically grow from the top of the trunk. The plant produces clusters of reddish fruits that remain suspended even when ripe and bears white flowers with a pleasant fragrance.
Care
The Veitchia merrillii thrives best in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil to prevent the roots from retaining water. Watering should be moderate; excessive watering can lead to root rot. Regular fertilization is essential for the growth of this palm and should occur during the growing season in spring and summer. In winter, lower temperatures are acceptable, but the plant must be protected against frost.
