Description
Origin
The Veitchia merrillii, also known as Adonidia merrillii, is a tropical palm species native to the Philippines. This lush palm is named after the American botanist Elmer Drew Merrill. The first description of this species was provided by Odoardo Beccari, an Italian botanist.
Characteristics
The Veitchia merrillii is an elegant palm that reaches a height of 15 to 25 meters, with a slender, gray trunk marked by leaf scars. This type of palm is distinguished by its green, feathery leaves that can reach a length of 2 to 4 meters. The fruits of this palm are bright red, appear festive, and develop into sweet white or yellowish flesh when fully ripe.
Care
The Veitchia merrillii requires minimal care and is ideal for adding a tropical touch to the landscape. This palm prefers full sunlight to partial shade and needs well-drained soil to thrive. Additionally, this species requires moderate to high water levels but can withstand short periods of drought. Nevertheless, regular watering and fertilization during the growing season will promote growth and health.
