Description

Origin
The Veitchia merrillii, also known as the Adonidia merrillii, is a tropical palm native to the Philippines. It is notably known on the island of Palawan, as well as in urban areas like Manila. The plant is named after Elmer Drew Merrill, a prominent American botanist who made significant contributions to research on the flora of the Philippines and East Asia.

Characteristics

The Veitchia merrillii is a slender, upright palm that can reach a height of 6 to 8 meters. It has a grey, smooth trunk and dark green leaves that characteristically grow from the top of the trunk. The plant produces clusters of reddish fruits that remain hanging even when ripe, and it bears white flowers that emit a pleasant fragrance.

Care

The Veitchia merrillii thrives best in full sun to partial shade and requires well-drained soil to prevent the roots from retaining water. Watering should be moderate; excessive watering can lead to root rot. Regular fertilization is essential for this palm’s growth and should occur during the growing period in spring and summer. In winter, lower temperatures are acceptable, but the plant must be protected from frost.
