Description
Origin
The Trachycarpus wagnerianus, commonly known as ‘Waggy Palm’, originates from the mountainous regions of Japan and China. This species of palm has been cultivated there for hundreds of years in monastery gardens. The plant is named after the German botanist Moritz Wagner, who quickly recognized the plant’s unique characteristics.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus wagnerianus is a species of palm that stands out for its size, strength, and beauty. The plant is naturally compact and has beautiful fan-shaped leaves, giving it a decorative appearance. The plant can reach a height of 2.5 to 4 meters and withstands low temperatures well. This winter-hardy palm species can also survive temperatures as low as -15 degrees Celsius.
Care
For optimal growth, the Trachycarpus wagnerianus needs sunlight as well as shaded areas. Also, ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent root rot. Although the plant is winter-hardy, it will survive better if protected from extreme cold during this period. Finally, the plant does not require a lot of fertilization; once a year in spring is sufficient.
