Description
Origin
The Trachycarpus wagnerianus, also known as Trachycarpus ‘Wagnerianus’, originally hails from the mountainous regions of the Himalayas and the northern part of Myanmar. The plant has adapted to the harsh climate of high altitudes, making it very cold-resistant. Originally, this palm, with its compact shape and attractive leaves, was spread to other parts of the world.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus wagnerianus is recognizable by its compact fan-shaped leaves, which, unlike many other palms, do not spread but droop downward. The plant has a sturdy trunk covered with a rough, fibrous texture. This winter-hardy palm can reach heights of 10 to 12 meters, making it suitable for gardens as well as indoor spaces. In spring, the palm produces small yellow flowers that, after pollination, become small black fruits.
Care
Despite its origin, the Trachycarpus wagnerianus requires little specific care. The plant is cold-resistant and can grow in full sun as well as partial shade, but does not tolerate overly moist soil. During the growing period from April to September, it can be beneficial to water the plant regularly and fertilize it once a month. Older leaves that turn brown can be cut off to stimulate new growth.
