Description
Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese windmill palm, has its roots in China. This species of palm is mostly found in the mountainous regions of China, where the climate is relatively cooler. This explains why the Trachycarpus fortunei is one of the most winter-resistant palms. Initially, the plant was primarily cultivated for its fibers, used in making ropes and mats, but it later gained a more decorative function.
Features
The Trachycarpus fortunei is an ornamental palm with evergreen, fan-shaped leaves. The plant can reach a height of 15 meters, although it typically remains shorter in garden conditions. The trunk is covered with fibers, a remnant of the old leaf bases, forming a protective layer against the cold. Unique to this species of palm is the upward growth of its leaves, providing a beautiful contrast with its clusters of hanging yellow flowers.
Care
The Trachycarpus fortunei is an easy-care palm. It prefers a sunny or semi-shaded spot and well-drained soil. Although the palm is moderately drought-tolerant, it thrives better with regular watering, especially during the hotter months. It is important to protect the plant against extreme cold by applying a layer of mulch around the base during the winter months. Annual fertilization in spring promotes plant growth and health. Although the Trachycarpus fortunei is wind-resistant, it is recommended to protect young plants to prevent root damage.
