Description
Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese windmill palm or the Chinese fan palm, is a species of palm native to central China, Burma, and northern India. This palm is most commonly found in temperate climate regions. The palm’s name is a tribute to Robert Fortune, a Scottish botanist who brought the species to Europe in the 19th century.
Characteristics
Regarding its characteristics, the Trachycarpus fortunei is a hardy palm that can reach up to 12 meters in height. What distinguishes this palm are its fan-shaped leaves, each of which can measure between 75 and 100 cm wide. Additionally, the plant has a fibrous trunk often covered with a loose mat of fibrous threads. The palm can produce both male and female flowers. The sexes can be distinguished by the size of the flowers, with male flowers being smaller than female flowers.
Care
The Trachycarpus fortunei requires specific care to thrive. The plant enjoys sunlight but also tolerates shade; it grows well in well-draining soil and needs to be watered regularly. This palm can survive in colder climates that other palms cannot tolerate, although it requires additional protection in cold weather, such as winter covering. Pruning is generally not necessary except to remove dead leaves. Fertilizers can be added to stimulate growth but are not always needed.
