Description

Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese windmill palm, originates from the Himalayan mountain range. In these mountainous regions of China and northern India, the plant has adapted to various climatic conditions. This palm is therefore considered one of the most cold-resistant palms in the world. It was introduced to the West in the first half of the 19th century and has since found its place in gardens and parks worldwide.

Characteristics

The Trachycarpus fortunei is a palm that can reach a height of 12 meters in the wild and is characterized by its fan-shaped leaves. The plant’s trunk is covered with fibers that become brown and woody over time. The leaves, dark green in color, can reach a diameter of nearly one meter. The palm produces small fragrant flowers in clusters that later turn into bluish-black fruits.

Care

Regarding the care of the Trachycarpus fortunei, there is some flexibility. The plant thrives in both sun and partial shade, but prefers well-drained soil. The palm should be watered regularly, especially during the summer months, but stagnant water should be avoided to prevent root rot. The annual addition of organic fertilizers during the growing season contributes to the palm’s overall health and growth. Like all palms, the Trachycarpus fortunei loses its old leaves, which should ideally be pruned to maintain the overall shape of the palm.
