Description
Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese windmill palm, originates from the mountainous regions of Asia, specifically in China and India. Due to its exceptional frost resistance, this palm is the northernmost in the world and its origin is a mild to cold climate.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a slow-growing evergreen palm that can reach heights of 10 to 20 meters at maturity. The trunk is covered with fibers and is generally solitary, but several trunks can also grow from the base. The palm leaves are fan-shaped, large, and have long spiny petioles. The flowers of this palm vary from yellow to light lilac and are followed by round fruits that, when ripe, turn blue-black in color.
Care
Despite its origin in cold regions, the Trachycarpus fortunei can thrive both in full sun and partial shade but must be protected from strong winds. It needs well-drained soil, preferably clay or sandy, and requires regular but moderate watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Although the palm is quite tolerant of poor soils, it performs best with regular feeding, especially during the growing season.
