Description
Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese Windmill Palm, originates from the Middle and Far East. It grows wild in regions like the Himalayas, northern India, Burma, and China. It is one of the most winter-hardy palms, able to survive extreme cold, which has allowed it to spread widely.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is an evergreen palm that, under ideal conditions, can reach a height of 12 to 20 meters. Its trunk is covered with a fibrous material that acts as natural insulation against cold and moisture. The leaves form a fan and can reach up to 1 meter in diameter, with many small narrow and pointed segments. It blooms with yellow flowers in late spring or summer.
Care
In terms of care, the Trachycarpus fortunei needs a sunny to partly shaded location, preferably protected from strong winds. The soil should be well-drained, but the palm also tolerates poor soils. Watering should be moderate, as too much water can cause root rot. While the palm is young, an additional layer of mulch around the base can help protect the roots from cold and drought.
