Description
Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese windmill palm, originates from China and Northern India. It is primarily found in the mountainous regions of these countries. The tree was named after Robert Fortune, a Scottish botanist who brought the plant to Europe in the 19th century.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is a hardy palm, resistant to cold. The plant can reach a height of twelve meters and has large fan-shaped leaves that can span up to two meters. The trunk of the tree is covered with fibrous layers, a natural adaptation to the cold mountain climates. The plant produces small yellow flowers followed by blue-black round fruits.
Care
The Trachycarpus fortunei thrives well in moderate to cold climates and is frost-resistant. The plant requires well-draining soil and enough space to grow. While it tolerates sunlight, some shade is recommended. In addition to regular watering, this palm requires regular feeding during the growth period. Pruning is generally not necessary, but old, brown leaves can be removed to encourage growth.
