Description
Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese fan palm, originates from East Asia, specifically in the mountainous regions of China and Myanmar. The species was introduced to Europe in 1849, where it is used as an ornamental palm in parks and gardens.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus fortunei is an evergreen palm with a tall, straight trunk that can reach heights of up to 12 meters. The leaves are fan-shaped, deeply inserted, and can have a diameter of nearly 100 centimeters. In spring, the palm produces small yellow flowers in large clusters, followed by small bluish fruits in late summer.
Care
Though the Trachycarpus fortunei is a subtropical plant, it is particularly cold-resistant and can survive temperatures as low as -15°C. The palm needs a sunny to semi-shade location and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Regular watering is essential, especially during drought periods, yet waterlogging should be avoided. Fertilizing during the growing season promotes palm growth.
