Description

Origin
The Trachycarpus fortunei, also known as the Chinese fan palm, is a species of palm native to the mountainous regions of Northern India, Nepal, and Northern Burma. It is one of the most cold-resistant palm species in existence. They were introduced and cultivated in Europe and America in the 19th century.

Characteristics

The Trachycarpus fortunei can reach a height of 20 meters and is recognizable by its fan-shaped leaves, which can have a diameter of up to two meters. This palm species is dioecious, meaning there are male and female specimens. The trunk of the palm is characterized by its fibrous appearance, caused by the remains of fallen leaves. The flowers appear in large hanging clusters.

Care

Although the Trachycarpus fortunei is considered a very cold-resistant species, it still requires special care in colder climates. It prefers well-drained soil and a sunny to semi-shaded location. It is advisable to protect the palm against severe frost and cold wind in winter. Young plants need regular watering, but adult palms are quite tolerant of drought.
