Description
Origin
The Toona sinensis ‘Flamingo’, also known as Chinese Mahogany, originates from East Asia. This plant is found in the wild in countries such as China, Korea, and India. It is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that belongs to the Meliaceae family.
Characteristics
The Toona sinensis ‘Flamingo’ is distinguished by its brilliant pink to red-white leaves that change color to green later in the season. It is a medium-sized tree that can reach a height of about 20 to 25 meters. The flowers of the Toona sinensis ‘Flamingo’ are small, white, and discreet but emit a strong odor. They usually appear in July. The leaves are compound and resemble feathers, ranking among the largest broadleaf tree leaves in Europe.
Care
The Toona sinensis ‘Flamingo’ requires little maintenance. The tree grows best in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Excessive water can cause root rot, so it’s recommended to choose a soil type that can well drain excess water. During dry periods, additional watering might be needed. If the tree becomes too large, it can be pruned in early spring. It’s important to properly treat all pruning cuts to prevent diseases.
