Description
Origin
The Taxus x media ‘Hillii’ is a hybrid between Taxus baccata and Taxus cuspidata, two species of yews from Europe and Asia. The plant originated in North America at the end of the 19th century. The ‘Hillii’ has since spread worldwide and is now mainly found in gardens and parks.
Characteristics
The Taxus x media ‘Hillii’ is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub with dark green needles that provide color to the garden throughout the year. The plant has a compact shape and can grow widely. Typical of the ‘Hillii’ are the upright branches and the absence of red berries that are found in many other yew varieties. The plant can reach an age of several years.
Maintenance
Maintaining the Taxus x media ‘Hillii’ starts with choosing the right location. This plant prefers a semi-shade or full sun position and well-drained, fertile soil. Although it requires little maintenance, annual trimming in late spring will preserve the shape and compactness of the plant. It’s advisable to water the plant more during dry periods. Feeding with a general garden fertilizer in spring promotes the plant’s growth and health.
