Description

Origin
The Taxus media ‘Hicksii’ is a variety of Taxus x media, a cross between Taxus baccata and Taxus cuspidata. This cross first took place in the UK in the 19th century. Originally, the ‘Hicksii’ was developed in the United States and is best known in North America and Europe.

Characteristics

The Taxus media ‘Hicksii’ is a slow-growing conifer that can reach a height of 4 meters. The tree has dark green, needle-like leaves. Female trees produce small red berries with a single seed. In autumn, these berries give the tree a picturesque appearance. The ‘Hicksii’ is very cold hardy and retains its foliage in all seasons.

Care

Although the Taxus media ‘Hicksii’ does not require much maintenance, there are some care aspects that can improve its health and growth. The tree grows best in well-drained soil and performs well in full sun or shade. It is recommended to prune the tree in late spring or early autumn. Although drought-tolerant, it requires moderately to highly moist soil and regular watering during dry periods. It is also recommended to apply a layer of mulch to keep the roots cool and moist.
