Description
Origin
The Taxus baccata ‘Summergold’ is a cultivar of the Taxus baccata, which is naturally found in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia. The ‘Summergold’ originates from selective cultivation methods aimed at enhancing certain characteristics of the parent plant. Unlike the standard Taxus baccata, the ‘Summergold’ has been specifically cultivated for its remarkable foliage color.
Characteristics
The Taxus baccata ‘Summergold’ is a small to medium-sized evergreen shrub with golden to yellow needles in summer, which turn bronze in the cold months. The plant has a compact growth and over time forms a dense, well-structured hedge. The plant can reach a height of 150 cm. The ‘Summergold’ produces red, berry-like fruits, but only if both male and female plants are present.
Care
The Taxus baccata ‘Summergold’ can grow in full sun to partial shade. The plant is tolerant of many soil types but prefers well-drained soil. Pruning to maintain shape should ideally take place early in spring before new growth. The ‘Summergold’ has medium water needs and should receive additional water during periods of drought. Despite its hardiness, caution should be taken with extreme weather conditions such as severe frost and strong winds.
