Description
Origin
Taxus baccata ‘Summergold’ is a cultivar of Taxus baccata, naturally found in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and Western Asia. ‘Summergold’ originated from selective breeding methods aimed at enhancing certain characteristics of the parent plant. Unlike the standard Taxus baccata, ‘Summergold’ has been specifically bred for its remarkable foliage color.
Characteristics
Taxus baccata ‘Summergold’ is a small to medium-sized evergreen shrub with golden to yellow needles in summer, turning bronze in the colder months. The plant grows compactly and over time forms a dense, well-structured hedge. The plant can reach a height of 150 cm. ‘Summergold’ produces red, berry-like fruits, but only if there are both male and female plants present.
Care
Taxus baccata ‘Summergold’ can grow in full sun to partial shade. The plant is tolerant of many soil types but prefers well-drained soil. Pruning to maintain shape is ideally done in early spring before new growth. ‘Summergold’ has moderate water needs and should receive additional water during drought periods. Despite its resilience, care should be taken with extreme weather conditions such as severe frost and strong winds.
