Description

Origin
The Taxus baccata is a species from the yew family (Taxaceae) native to Europe. During the last glacial period, various isolation periods each led to a distinct subspecies, which explains the typical variety within the species.

Characteristics

The Taxus baccata, also called the common yew, is characterized by its longevity and can live for several thousand years. The tree has dark green, needle-shaped leaves. In the fall, it produces small red fruits, non-edible, surrounded by a well-red, edible seed covering.

Maintenance

The Taxus baccata is an easy-to-maintain plant that thrives both in shade and in sunlight and prefers well-drained soil. The plant responds well to pruning and is therefore ideal for hedges. For optimal growth and development, the Taxus baccata requires moderate fertilization.
