The Taxus baccata is a species of the yew family (Taxaceae) native to Europe. During the last glacial period, various periods of isolation each led to a distinct subspecies, which explains the typical variety within the species.

The Taxus baccata, also known as Common Yew, is characterized by its longevity and can live for several thousand years. The tree has dark green, needle-shaped leaves. In autumn, it produces small red, inedible fruits surrounded by a bright red seed coat, which is edible.
