Description
Origin
Taxus baccata is a species from the yew family (Taxaceae) native to Europe. During the last glacial period, various periods of isolation each led to a distinct subspecies, which explains the typical variety within the species.
Characteristics
Taxus baccata, also known as Common Yew, is characterized by its longevity and can reach a lifespan of several thousand years. The tree has dark green, needle-shaped leaves. In the autumn, it produces small, inedible red fruits, surrounded by a bright red, edible seed covering.
Care
Taxus baccata is an easy-care plant that thrives in both shade and sunlight and prefers well-drained soil. The plant responds well to pruning and is therefore ideal for hedges. For optimal growth and development, Taxus baccata requires moderate fertilization.
