Origin
The Strelitzia reginae, also known as the bird of paradise flower, is native to South Africa. The plant was introduced to Europe in the 18th century. The name Strelitzia reginae was given in honor of Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom, a princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
Characteristics
The Strelitzia reginae is an evergreen and remarkable plant with large upright leaves. The plant can reach up to two meters in height. The spectacular flowers of the Strelitzia reginae, which somewhat resemble the head of an exotic bird, are orange and blue in color. These flowers generally appear at the end of winter or the beginning of spring.
Care
For optimal growth, the Strelitzia reginae needs plenty of light but cannot tolerate direct sunlight. The plant requires regular watering, but it is important for the soil to dry well between each watering to prevent root rot. The Strelitzia reginae is not frost-resistant and should be brought indoors during cold months if grown outdoors.
