Origin
The Strelitzia reginae, also known as the bird of paradise flower, originates from South Africa. The plant was introduced to Europe in the 18th century. The name Strelitzia reginae was given in honor of Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom, a princess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
Characteristics
The Strelitzia reginae is an evergreen and remarkable plant with large, upright leaves. The plant can reach up to two meters in height. The spectacular flowers of the Strelitzia reginae, somewhat reminiscent of the head of an exotic bird, are orange and blue in color. These flowers typically appear at the end of winter or early spring.
Care
For optimal growth, the Strelitzia reginae requires plenty of light, but it does not tolerate direct sunlight. The plant needs regular watering, but it is important for the soil to dry out well between each watering to prevent root rot.
