Description

Origin
The Strelitzia nicolai, also known as the Giant White Bird of Paradise, is native to South Africa. It belongs to the Strelitziaceae family. The plant is named after the Russian tsar Nicholas I.

Characteristics

It is a tall plant with shiny, leathery leaves. The leaves are dark green, lance-shaped, and can reach two meters in length. The plant produces remarkable white and blue flowers, resembling the head of a bird of paradise, hence its name. The flowers typically bloom in late winter or early spring.

Care

The Strelitzia nicolai requires plenty of light but doesn’t tolerate direct sunlight very well. The plant needs a lot of water, especially during the growing period, but it’s also important to ensure good drainage to prevent water from stagnating. This plant prefers a nutrient-rich substrate and may benefit from regular fertilization during the growing period. The Strelitzia nicolai can be placed outside during the summer but needs to be protected from frost during the winter.
