Origin
Strelitzia nicolai, also known as the White Bird of Paradise plant, is native to South Africa. It is a species in the Strelitziaceae family. The plant is named after the Russian Tsar Nicholas I.
Characteristics
This is a tall plant with shiny, leathery leaves. The leaves are dark green, lance-shaped, and can reach up to two meters in length. The plant produces striking flowers with white and blue tones that resemble the head of a bird of paradise, hence its name. The flowers usually bloom in late winter or early spring.
Care
The Strelitzia nicolai needs a lot of light but does not tolerate direct sunlight well. The plant requires a lot of water, especially during the growth period, but it’s also important to ensure good drainage to prevent stagnant water. This plant prefers a nutrient-rich substrate and can benefit from regular fertilization during the growing season. The Strelitzia nicolai can be placed outdoors during the summer but needs to be protected from frost in the winter.
