Description

Origin
Strelitzia nicolai, also known as the White Bird of Paradise, is native to South Africa. It belongs to the family Strelitziaceae. The plant is named after the Russian Tsar Nicholas I.

Characteristics

It is a tall plant with glossy, leathery leaves. The leaves are dark green, lance-shaped, and can reach up to two meters in length. The plant produces striking flowers in shades of white and blue, resembling the head of a bird of paradise, which gives it its name. The flowers typically bloom at the end of winter or the beginning of spring.

Care

Strelitzia nicolai needs plenty of light but does not tolerate direct sunlight very well. The plant requires a lot of water, especially during the growing period, but it’s also crucial to ensure good drainage to prevent water stagnation. This plant prefers a nutrient-rich substrate and can benefit from regular fertilization during the growing season. Strelitzia nicolai can be placed outside during the summer, but it must be protected from frost during the winter.
