Description

Origin
The Rhapis excelsa, better known as the Lady Palm or Bamboo Palm, originates in southern China and Taiwan. The plant naturally grows in the shaded strata of tropical forests. In the 17th century, the Rhapis excelsa was introduced to Japan, where it was affectionately called ‘Bamboo Palm’ due to its resemblance to bamboo.

Characteristics

The Rhapis excelsa is characterized by its elegantly shaped, glossy leaves, composed of multiple segments. The trunk of the plant is covered with brownish fibrous shoots, resembling bamboo, which is why it is nicknamed ‘bamboo palm’. The plant remains relatively small compared to other palms, with a maximum height of about 4 meters under optimal growing conditions. Indoors and in a pot, the plant often remains smaller, reaching up to about 2 meters.

Care

The Rhapis excelsa thrives best at a temperature between 15 and 24 degrees Celsius. The plant prefers a shaded or semi-shaded location, as it also grows in shaded parts of the forest in nature. The Rhapis excelsa prefers well-draining soil and should be watered regularly, without allowing the roots to sit in water for too long. In general, the Rhapis excelsa is an easy-to-care-for plant and well-suited for indoor living.
