Description

Origin
The Rhapis excelsa, better known as the Lady Palm or Bamboo Palm, originates from southern China and Taiwan. The plant naturally grows in the shaded layers of tropical forests. In the 17th century, Rhapis excelsa was introduced to Japan, where it was affectionately called ‘Bamboo Palm’ due to its resemblance to bamboo.

Characteristics

Rhapis excelsa is characterized by its elegantly shaped, shiny leaves made up of several segments. The trunk of the plant is covered in brownish fibrous shoots, resembling bamboo, hence its nickname ‘bamboo palm’. The plant remains relatively small compared to other palms, with a maximum height of about 4 meters under optimal growth conditions. Indoors and in a pot, the plant often stays smaller, up to about 2 meters.

Care

Rhapis excelsa thrives best at temperatures between 15 and 24 degrees Celsius. The plant prefers a shady or semi-shady spot, as it also grows in shaded parts of the forest in its natural habitat. Rhapis excelsa prefers well-draining soil and should be watered regularly, without letting the roots remain in water for too long. In general, Rhapis excelsa is an easy-to-care-for plant and well-suited to indoor life.
