Description
Origin
The Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ is a hybrid tree of the Prunus genus, originating from Japan. The species name subhirtella means slightly hairy, referring to the fine hairs present on the leaves and shoots. The ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ variety was specifically designated due to its seasonal blooming and remarkably pink flowers.
Characteristics
The Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ is a small deciduous tree. It is characterized by its pink flower, which blooms in late autumn and again in early spring if weather conditions are mild. The leaves are oval and change color in autumn, ranging from yellow to red-bronze tones. The trunk is covered with smooth bark, similar to that of a cherry tree, in dark brown to black color.
Care
The Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis Rosea’ requires very little maintenance. It grows best in well-drained and fertile soil with a neutral pH value. It prefers full sun or partial shade but can also tolerate more significant shade. As long as the tree is young, annual pruning may be necessary to achieve a nice shape. Watering is generally only necessary during periods of drought.
