Description
Origin
The Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’ originates from areas around the Mediterranean Sea. This includes Portugal and the western parts of Spain and Morocco. This directly explains the addition of ‘lusitanica’, which is Latin for ‘from Portugal’. Furthermore, the species has also established itself in Ireland, Great Britain, New Zealand, and parts of the western United States.
Characteristics
The Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’ has a striking feature: its glossy, dark green leaves that are elongated and narrow. These leaves are narrower than those of the common Portuguese cherry laurel. The leaf remains thick and green all year round, making the plant an attractive evergreen addition to any garden. In early summer, the plant produces small white flowers that form clusters, followed by small red to black berries in the autumn.
Care
The Prunus lusitanica ‘Angustifolia’ requires much less maintenance compared to other woody plants. The plant’s growth is moderate, and it prefers full sun or partial shade. It thrives best in well-drained soil. It is recommended to water the plant during dry periods and to give it an annual pruning in late spring or early summer, after flowering, to control its shape and size.
