Description
Origin
The Portulacaria afra, also known as the elephant bush, is a succulent native to South Africa. This plant is primarily found in dry, rocky areas and is often found in the South African provinces of the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
Characteristics
The Portulacaria afra is a hardy and bushy perennial plant with dense branches and small, bright green oval leaves. This succulent can reach a maximum height of 4 meters and exhibits a growth pattern similar to a small tree. During the growing season, the plant can produce small pink flowers that attract bees and butterflies.
Care
In terms of care, the Portulacaria afra requires plenty of light and little water. It is recommended to place the plant in well-drained soil and water only when the soil is completely dry. Every two to three years, repotting the plant is necessary to encourage new growth. In cold climates, it is advisable to keep the plant indoors, as it does not tolerate frost well.
