Description
Origin
The Podocarpus macrophyllus, also known as the Buddha tree, is an evergreen conifer native to Japan and southern China. This plant is often found in mountain forests, valleys, and along rivers in these regions. In traditional Chinese culture, this tree is considered a symbol of longevity and is often planted around temples.
Characteristics
The Podocarpus macrophyllus is a slow-growing tree that can reach a height of 20 meters. Its needle-like leaves are dark green and can reach a length of 15 cm. The tree produces small conical fruits that turn yellow when ripe. This conifer has a wide and dense crown that is often used for privacy and as a windbreak.
Care
The Podocarpus macrophyllus requires moist, well-drained soil and a spot with plenty of sunlight. However, it also tolerates partial shade and dry conditions, making it a versatile plant for various landscapes. The tree needs minimal pruning but can be shaped into a desired form through initial pruning. Regular watering is important, especially in dry conditions, but the plant should not be overly wet.
