Origin
The Pleomele reflexa ‘Song of Jamaica’, better known as Dracaena reflexa, is an indoor plant native to Madagascar and the surrounding islands of the Indian Ocean. The plant belongs to the Asparagaceae family.
Characteristics
This plant is renowned for its distinctive leaves that are rich in color, typically in various shades of green with yellow shoots. The leaves are glossy, lance-shaped, and arranged in a spiral around the stem, creating an attractive effect. The ‘Song of Jamaica’ can reach a height of 3 meters when grown indoors but can become even taller outdoors.
Care
The ‘Song of Jamaica’ requires moderately bright to semi-shaded locations, avoiding direct sunlight. It is recommended to water the plant regularly, but be careful not to overwater as this could lead to root rot. A well-draining potting mix is ideal, and occasionally feeding the plant with a moderate amount of liquid fertilizer is beneficial. This plant can tolerate dry air well but appreciates being occasionally misted with lukewarm water.
