Origin
The Pleomele, also known as Dracaena reflexa, is native to Madagascar and other islands of the Indian Ocean, where it thrives both in rainforests and semi-deserts. In nature, this plant can transform into large dwarf trees. It was introduced years ago into other warm climates and is now also popular as an indoor plant in cooler regions, including Europe.
Characteristics
The Pleomele is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves that grow in a spiral at the end of strong, woody stems. The leaves reflect light strikingly and give the plant an elegant appearance. The impressive growth height, which can reach up to 6 meters in nature, is generally limited to about 2 meters indoors. Also noteworthy are the small white flowers in clusters, which can easily be overlooked due to their modest size.
Maintenance
For the maintenance of the Pleomele, it is important to ensure plenty of indirect light, as direct sun exposure can damage the leaves. It is recommended to let the soil dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. During growth in spring and summer, it is advisable to water the plant once a week. In winter, when the plant is dormant, watering should be reduced to once every two weeks. For healthy growth, it is advised to lightly feed the plant every two weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer. It is important to maintain air humidity to prevent leaf drop.
