Description
Origin
The Platycerium bifurcatum, better known as the Elkhorn or Staghorn fern, is a species of fern originally found only in Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Seychelles. Due to the plant’s popularity, it is now widespread around the world and is often kept as a houseplant.
Characteristics
The Platycerium bifurcatum owes its English names to the shape of its leaves, which closely resemble the antlers of an elk or a deer. The plant consists of two types of leaves: sterile basal leaves that die off and protect the roots, and fertile leaves that emerge from a central growth point. As the plant ages, more fertile leaves develop, standing out due to their unique shape.
Care
Caring for a Platycerium bifurcatum is not complicated. The plant prefers indirect sunlight and high humidity. It’s important to water the plant regularly but be cautious of overwatering, which can cause root rot. Fertilize ideally during the growing season, from March to August.
