Description

Origin
Phormium tenax ‘Variegatum’, also known as New Zealand flax, is a native plant of New Zealand. The Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, have used this plant for centuries for their traditional textile production. The plant has been introduced to different parts of the world for landscape architecture and horticulture.

Characteristics

This evergreen perennial plant has long, robust leaves that grow in clumps. The leaves are streaked with yellow and green, hence the term ‘variegatum’. They can reach a height of two to three meters. From late spring to early summer, Phormium tenax ‘Variegatum’ produces long floral stems with red or yellow flowers.

Care

Phormium tenax ‘Variegatum’ requires full sun to partial shade and can vary in drought and frost tolerance. The plant demands well-drained and fertile soil and should be regularly fertilized. Although drought-tolerant, regular watering during dry periods will improve the plant’s growth and overall health. Prune dead or damaged leaves as needed to maintain and rejuvenate the plant.
