Description

Origin
The Phormium tenax ‘Pink Stripe’ originates from New Zealand. This plant is part of the Hemerocallidaceae family and is also locally known as New Zealand flax. The Maori, the original inhabitants of New Zealand, used the fibers of this plant for textile production.

Characteristics

The Phormium tenax ‘Pink Stripe’ is a perennial evergreen plant distinguished by its long sword-shaped leaves. The leaves are dark green with a broad pink stripe in the middle, giving this variety a distinctive appearance. The plant reaches a height of 140 to 160 centimeters and blooms during the summer period, with long upright stems on which scarlet flowers appear.

Care

The maintenance of Phormium tenax ‘Pink Stripe’ requires well-drained soil and a sunny to semi-shaded position. Although the plant is quite hardy, it may need protection in the event of severe frost. The plant is not demanding in terms of soil type but prefers slightly more acidic soil. It is drought-resistant, so frequent watering is not necessary. Old dead leaves can simply be removed, and the plant can be lightly pruned in spring.
