Description
Origin
Phoenix roebelenii, commonly known as the Pygmy Date Palm, is a species of plants native to Southeast Asia, particularly Laos and Vietnam. It is in these regions that it grows wild along rivers and streams. This species was named in honor of botanist Carl Roebelen who first described the plant at the end of the 19th century.
Characteristics
The characteristics of Phoenix roebelenii are its long, thin stems covered with bases of old leaves. It is on these stems that the typical fine, feathery leaves grow, giving the plant a graceful appearance. The plant is not very tall and its growth is slow. Phoenix roebelenii also bears fruits that resemble small dates but are not consumable by humans.
Care
Phoenix roebelenii is a relatively easy plant to care for. It likes bright spots, but not direct sunlight. During the growth period, Phoenix roebelenii needs water regularly, but it is important to ensure that the roots are not in water. In winter, watering can be reduced. Additionally, this plant benefits from occasional feeding with a bit of fertilizer, universally available in the commercial marketplace.
