Description

Origin
The Phoenix dactylifera, also known as the date palm, originates from the Middle East and North Africa. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world and has played a significant role in the history and economy of these regions. The ancient Egyptians, for example, used the fruits of the date palm as food and the leaves and fibers to make all sorts of products.

Characteristics

The Phoenix dactylifera is a slow-growing palm tree that can reach a height of 30 meters. The plant has blue-green pinnate leaves that can measure up to 4 meters long and have spiny tips. The clusters of hanging fruits, which we know as dates, are usually hidden high in the tree within the foliage. Dates are brown when ripe, have a sweet taste, and are very nutritious.

Care

In its natural habitat, the Phoenix dactylifera is very drought-resistant and thrives in hot, sunny climates with well-drained soil. For optimal growth, adequate water supply is necessary, especially during fruit development. Although this plant can be grown indoors, it will not produce fruit under these conditions. Pruning is generally not required except to remove dead leaves and make room for new growth.
