Description

Origin
The Phoenix canariensis, also known as the Canary Island date palm, originates from the Canary Islands. This archipelago is situated in the Atlantic Ocean, off the northwest coast of Africa. This explains the Phoenix canariensis’ love for sunny and warm conditions.

Characteristics

The Phoenix canariensis can become a truly monumental palm tree, with a trunk height reaching up to 20 meters and a crown of leaves of 12 meters. The leaves of this type of palm can reach up to 6 meters in length. The tree bears edible fruits that resemble dates. These sweet orange fruits are oval-shaped and measure about 2 cm wide.

Care

The Phoenix canariensis prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. It is a very winter-hardy palm that can withstand below-zero temperatures, but it is best to find a frost-free location in colder climates. For optimal growth, the tree requires regular watering, but it’s important to avoid waterlogged soil. The Phoenix canariensis has few soil requirements, but improving the drainage with coarse sand or perlite is recommended for heavy clay soils.
