Description

Origin
The Phoenix canariensis, also known as the Canary Island date palm, originates from the Canary Islands. This archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa. This explains the Phoenix canariensis’ love for sunny and warm conditions.

Characteristics

The Phoenix canariensis can become a truly monumental palm tree, with a trunk height of up to 20 meters and a crown of leaves measuring 12 meters. The leaves of this type of palm can reach lengths of up to 6 meters. The tree bears edible fruits resembling dates. These sweet orange fruits have an oval shape and are about 2 cm wide.

Care

The Phoenix canariensis prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. It is a very winter-hardy palm that can withstand below-freezing temperatures, but it’s best to find a frost-free location in colder climates. For optimal growth, the tree requires regular watering, but it’s important to avoid waterlogged soil. The Phoenix canariensis has few soil demands, but improving drainage with coarse sand or perlite is recommended for heavy clay soils.
