Description
Origin
The Phoenix canariensis, also known as the Canary Island date palm, originates from the Canary Islands. This archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the northwest coast of Africa. This explains the Phoenix canariensis’ love for sunny and warm conditions.
Features
The Phoenix canariensis can become a truly monumental palm, with a trunk height reaching 20 meters and a crown of leaves 12 meters wide. The leaves of this type of palm can grow up to 6 meters long. The tree bears edible fruit resembling dates. These sweet orange fruits are oval-shaped and measure about 2 cm wide.
Care
The Phoenix canariensis prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. It is a very winter-hardy palm that can withstand temperatures below zero, but it is best to find a frost-protected location in colder climates. For optimal growth, the tree requires regular watering, but it’s important to avoid waterlogged soil. The Phoenix canariensis has minimal soil requirements, but improving drainage with coarse sand or perlite is recommended for heavy clay soils.
