Description

Origin
The Oreocereus celsianus originates from the high mountains of South America. It primarily grows in Argentina and Bolivia, in areas situated between 2000 and 3500 meters above sea level. This cactus has adapted to hard and rocky surfaces as well as extreme weather conditions. It is a slow-growing plant, with some specimens capable of living for several hundred years.

Characteristics

The Oreocereus celsianus is a column-shaped cactus that can grow to a considerable size, with a height ranging between 1 and 3 meters. Its most distinctive feature is a thick white ‘beard’ of long woolly hairs, protecting the plant from extreme temperatures. The cactus produces small pink or reddish flowers that bloom primarily in summer. The flowers are ephemeral and often disappear after only a day. This species of cactus has long, sharp, gray spines.

Care

Caring for an Oreocereus celsianus requires some attention. The plant loves full sun but should be protected from the sun during the hottest hours of the day. This cactus can withstand moderate frost, but it is recommended to avoid temperatures below -2°C. As with all cacti, the Oreocereus celsianus needs well-draining soil to prevent root rot. It is essential to water during the growth period, but watering should be limited during the resting period in winter. This helps the cactus mimic its original environment, similar to a desert.
